Two enameled cast iron pots. One costs far more.

We don’t test pots. We count how many websites name them. Here is what the count says, and what it can’t say.

Three steps up

Start with Lodge and stay there. Or climb. Lodge’s skillet is the entry. Lodge’s enameled pot is the middle. Le Creuset is the top.

The skillet is a pan, not a pot. But it’s the Lodge most people know, and it tops the whole site. It’s here to show where Lodge starts.

The pots, side by side

Price. Lodge enameled sits in the $50-$100 band. Le Creuset is over $300. Going by the bands, that’s at least three times the price. These are rough bands, not live prices. Check Amazon for today’s.

Lists. Le Creuset is named by 16 lists. Lodge enameled by 8. Twice the lists.

Where the lists come from.

Lodge Enameled Le Creuset
Tested hands-on (by others) 6 6
Iconic-product lists 0 6
Buy-it-for-life roundups 0 3
Life-changing buys 1 1
Sales charts (count half) 1 0

Look at the first row. Six tested lists name each pot. Five websites name both.

Now the rest. Le Creuset’s extra lists are the iconic and buy-it-for-life ones. That’s nine of its sixteen. Lodge enameled has none of those.

What the numbers can’t say

We haven’t cooked in either. The count can’t tell you which one cooks better or lasts longer. It tells you how many websites back each. Each website counts once, so one loud site can’t tip the scale.

What owners say

Two owners, one pot each:

I own a couple of items on the list now (Le Creuset Dutch Oven, and Kitchenaid Mixer) and I can attest to their durability.

That being said, I use a $40 Lodge enameled cast iron Dutch oven, and it works just as well.

— inferiorhuman, Lodge enameled Dutch oven owner, no length given (Hacker News, 2020; source)

…it’s pretty well documented that their enamel doesn’t hold up as well.

— inferiorhuman, same comment, on Lodge’s enamel next to Le Creuset’s (Hacker News, 2020; source)

Quick answer

Want tested-list backing at the lower band: Lodge enameled. Want the pot the iconic lists name, and can spend over $300: Le Creuset. Either way, many websites name your pick.
